Key Programs & Services
Meals on Wheels is a valuable service that provides nutritious meals to individuals, often seniors, who may have difficulty preparing meals for themselves. This service is particularly sought after by health professionals on behalf of residents returning home after surgery or an extended hospital stay for several reasons:
Nutritional Support: After surgery or a prolonged hospital stay, individuals may have specific dietary needs to support their recovery.
Independence: For individuals recovering from surgery or illness, maintaining independence is crucial. Meals on Wheels allows them to stay in their own homes while still receiving the necessary nutritional support, promoting a sense of autonomy.
By connecting residents with Meals on Wheels,
we contribute to a comprehensive approach to
post-surgery or post-hospitalization care, addressing not only medical needs but also the practical aspects of daily living and nutrition.
What makes our program unique
At least 20% of the Altadena population are senior citizens. A large majority of these residents are choosing to age in place. Many of them do not qualify to receive frozen meals through the LA County program. Alternatively, they will be placed on a very long waiting list if they qualify. AMOW provides the invaluable service of implementing an immediate meal delivery service, long-term or short-term.
Hot meals are provided weekly from Monday to Friday to all residents who request the service. Meals on Wheels is available to any resident who is unable to prepare or shop for a nutritious meal, regardless of reason. Our purpose is to supply nourishing meals at a minimum cost to people unable to cook, drive, shop, or leave their home for an extended period.
Overall, the combination of home delivery, nutritional focus, customization, social interaction, volunteer engagement, and community collaboration makes Meals on Wheels a unique and impactful program for supporting the well-being of individuals, particularly those recovering from surgery or facing health challenges.
Home Delivery: One of the primary features that set Meals on Wheels apart is its focus on home delivery. Meals are delivered directly to the homes of individuals in need, especially those who may have difficulty leaving their homes due to age, illness, or recovery from surgery.
